Grand Theft Auto III
In actuality, the history of modern Grand Theft Auto as players know it began with Grand Theft Auto 3, which DMA Design launched for the PlayStation 2 in 2001 and the PC version in 2002 (the same year the studio changed its name to Rockstar North).
Following the "flat" Grand Theft Auto and Grand Theft Auto 2, this game has 3D visuals, was innovative for its time (using the RenderWare game engine), and offers previously unheard-of levels of freedom. The game's success was evident: GTA 3 was named "game of the year" by numerous specialized journals, and it is still listed among the most important initiatives for the computer gaming industry.

The year 2001, or the year the game was launched, is regarded as the time period for Grand Theft Auto 3. Claude, the game's protagonist, is a silent criminal whose name is never disclosed. While trying to rob a bank, he is apprehended and found guilty. After the robbery, Catalina, his partner, abandoned him. A police motorcade is ambushed while it is delivering inmates. Claude and another inmate, Eight-ball (8-ball), take advantage of this chance to flee. Notably, a number of characters from Grand Theft Auto 3 made an appearance in one form or another in later games in the series: Toni Cipriani, a member of the Leone family who assigns tasks to Claude, is the protagonist of GTA Liberty City Stories; Catalina, who betrayed Claude, makes a brief appearance in GTA San Andreas; and Claude himself makes a brief appearance in multiple videos.
Players first learned the hero's identity from San Andreas, but this same information also led to the rise of other questions, such as if Claude from Grand Theft Auto 3 is the same Claude Speed as the protagonist of Grand Theft Auto 2. "Claude's last name may or may not be Speed," a Rockstar developer wrote in response to player inquiries.
As previously stated, the genre in which Grand Theft Auto 3 is set—or rather, a combination of genres—involves freedom of movement across a vast area (notably, for the first time in the series, seamless changes in the time of day and dynamic changes in the weather were implemented) and the accomplishment of various tasks that are assigned to the hero by secondary characters. The game offers numerous extra and optional objectives, such as the chance to work part-time as a taxi driver, in addition to the primary duties that further the plot.
In addition to using your feet, you can move around the area with the use of automobiles (up to 50 in the game) and boats (four of them). Additionally, there is a plane in the game that, according to the developers' responses, was more of a joke. They didn't imagine that players would be genuinely interested in a flying vehicle while they were making a game about cars and shootouts. The next sections featured motorcycles, bicycles, and helicopters; however, it's interesting that fans attempted to incorporate these modes of transportation into Grand Theft Auto 3 independently.
You can effectively shoot members of opposing organizations or, if anyone prefers, regular inhabitants using an amazingly large set of weaponry. Furthermore, this is the only section in Grand Theft Auto that uses body dismemberment; when Claude fires a gun at a person, their arms and legs fly off in a comical manner. Not to mention that in Grand Theft Auto 3, a player can freely run along the sidewalk, knocking down everyone in his path, after stealing a car from a civilian or non-citizen.
These days, it's rare to witness such brutality in video games, and it's unclear if it's good or bad. However, this game used to generate a lot of buzz and controversy, and the Rockstar firm typically attempted to project a scandalous image for itself.
There have been rumors that some elements of Grand Theft Auto 3 were eliminated, and although it is true that each game at different stages of production is deprived of both intriguing and uninteresting advancements, not all of the information that is currently available regarding cut content is accurate. For instance, a homeless guy named Darkell, one of the characters removed from the final version, is said to have given Claude the assignment to drop a bomb on the stadium. However, this episode and Darkell were removed from the final version because of the terrorist assault on September 11.
In a recent interview, the developers refuted claims by stating that the game hasn't changed much since the terrorist assault and that many of the stories that have sprung up around it are just that—legends. In the meantime, it should be mentioned that the game has a good number of actual secrets. There is no doubting that GTA 3 gave the entire series of games a significant boost, enabling Rockstar to become one of the biggest and most powerful companies in the gaming industry, regardless of whether players enjoy it, know little about it, or treat it with indifference.
